Principal Investigator (Microbiology / Biodefense)

U.S. ARMY MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland

U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Center for Aerobiological Sciences, Department of Animal Studies in Fort Detrick, Maryland seeks to recruit a dynamic principal investigator to join a multidisciplinary team that conducts and supports research on the development of medical countermeasures against aerosol exposure to biological threat agents.

The selected candidate will develop animal models for diseases caused by inhalation of relevant biothreat agents to include bacterial, viral, and protein toxins in BSL-2 or higher containment laboratories. Studies may include characterization of disease pathogenesis, host immune responses, and evaluation of potential medical countermeasures to include vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics for these agents. Other responsibilities will include training and mentoring technical staff and giving briefings and presentations that highlight projects, objectives, progress, accomplishments and opportune areas to Army management and the scientific community as well as publishing original research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants must have the ability to evaluate broad areas of biology to identify the best synergies between scientific opportunities and Army needs. Experience must have been in or related to the work of the position and equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., or D.V.M., or M.D. degree and have minimum of 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience. Experience with laboratory animals and good laboratory practices (GLP) are desired. Excellent oral and written communications skills and strong computer skills are required.
