Phylogeneticist

The Battelle Science & Technology Center's Analytical Chemistry Group (BESTC-ACG)

Battelle is an international science and technology enterprise that explores emerging areas of science, develops and commercializes technology, and manages laboratories for customers. Battelle supports community and education programs to promote an enhanced quality of life for our community neighbors. We're committed to making the world a better place through our work with government, industry and community in the key areas of: Energy, Health & Life Sciences, National Security, Laboratory Management, and Education. These key businesses integrate capabilities across Battelle, including the national laboratories we manage or co-manage for the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to create greater value for our customers, the nation and, ultimately, the global community.

The Battelle Science & Technology Center's Analytical Chemistry Group (BESTC-ACG) is a part of the Chemical, Environmental and Materials Operations Product Line and is providing laboratory support to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) in central Maryland. The position is located at the CFSAN facilities at Laurel, Maryland. BESTC-ACG is working with FDA/CFSAN to develop methods for molecular epidemiology and microbial forensics by the use of phylogenetics and bioinformatics analyses. These methods would allow the triaging of strains for more extensive analysis, such as DNA microarray and sequencing analyses, if required for epidemiological investigation or enforcement actions.

Position Summary

BESTC-ACG is seeking a Phylogeneticist(Research Scientist) with knowledge in the techniques of molecular biology and microbiology, with a particular emphasis on the various conceptual and technical aspects of genomic DNA analysis. The successful candidate should have experience and training involving DNA microarray technology and genotyping. The research would exploit phylogenetics and genomics-based approaches that relate to the molecular genetic/epidemiological characterization of foodborne pathogens. It would make use of DNA microarray data, whole genome sequences as well as MLST and SNP data, markers from optical mapping of chromosomes, and phenotypic data from Biolog analyses for identification and sub-typing outbreak strains.

Position Responsibilities

Specific tasks include:

- Utilize phylogenetics disciplines for the genomic analysis of pathogenic bacteria and the study of their evolution
- Perform genomic analysis of pathogenic bacteria by utilizing phylogenetics approaches to DNA microarray technology.
- Formulate DNA chips containing DNA oligonucleotides or prepared PCR-amplified fragments of DNA.
- Prepare and label genomic DNA of pathogenic bacteria for analysis.
- Perform hybridization of DNA to DNA microarrays.
- Perform bioinformatics analysis of developed DNA microarrays.
- Collect and store data generated from experimental development and analysis.
- Perform general maintenance and upkeep of the automated equipment used in DNA microarray analyses.

Required Qualifications

Candidate must demonstrate the following minimum requirements in order to be forwarded for consideration:

- An M.S. or Ph.D. degree in an applicable biological discipline such as Microbiology, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology.
- A minimum of two years of work experience in the area of molecular and/or microbiology.
- Knowledge in the techniques of molecular biology and microbiology, with a particular emphasis on the various conceptual and technical aspects of genomic DNA analysis is required.
- Have experience involving DNA microarray technology and genotyping.

Battelle is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/D/V.
