ASCB Staff Scientist

The staff scientist will assist with ASCB career development and science education programs, including regional meetings, Annual Meeting sessions, African workshops, grants writing and reporting, researching and following up on potential funding sources, and development of materials for diverse audiences using diverse venues and approaches (e.g., press releases, website postings, blogs, fact sheets, presentations, Facebook pages, Newsletter articles, e-journal clubs, advertisement text, letters).

* Assist with scientific/educational aspects of Society’s initiatives, including the new ASCB website BioEDUCATE
* Create effective outreach materials (releases, website postings, blogs, fact sheets, presentations, Facebook and Wikipedia pages, Newsletter articles, advertisements, letters) re: ASCB positions and bench to bedside scientific discoveries and disseminate to diverse audiences (ASCB members, Hill staff, media, the public, potential members)
* Help assess and address the needs of, and publicize and market ASCB programs to, graduate students, postdocs, and early career scientists
* Work with staff and members to implement special sessions/meetings focused on career development, funding, or other topics
* Provide support to new subcommittee on graduate training/Graduate Council
* Develop outreach materials
* Help develop career development program for member graduate students, postdocs, and early career scientists that builds on current Minorities Affairs Committee, Women in Cell Biology Committee, and Subcommittee on Postdoctoral Training programs
* Research funding opportunities
* Write grant proposals and reports for Society programs, including child-care awards for ASCB Annual Meeting attendees and African workshops and awards
* Manage small, regional, scientific meeting grant program: develop and process grant applications, coordinate with selection committee, provide support to local organizers
* Provide support as needed for occasional caucuses and Hill Days

* Ph.D. in cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, or genetics
* Excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences
* Track record of demonstrated commitment to deadlines and details
* Ability to multitask
* Knowledge of science education

Weekly Update

Another week has gone and DC Metro Biojobs continues to grow. These week we added more RSS feeds and direct links for DC area job listings from six additional career websites. This brings the total number of RSS feeds in our "Recent Offsite Jobs Listings" blog roll to ten. That's one website bringing you ten live listings for local area biotech jobs. In addition, we now have DIRECT links to search results that are specific for the biotech and life sciences industries from 25 job listing services. We have included these links at the end of this post.

In terms of traffic, the website continues to grow. In the last week, we've featured 23 jobs and received a total of 251 visitors (+67%) and 427 page views (+53%). Our total traffic since the our start date has now includes 444 visitors and 944 page views. This is great! Slowly the word is getting out that this is soon going to be the one-stop shopping site for all the DC area biotechnology and life science related jobs.

As a final note: If you know of any job listings for the DC Metro Area that might be suitable for our site, please don't hesitate to forward them to me. I'll post them before the end of the day.

The Medical Biotechnology Center (MBC) of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level (position #300958). The MBC is one of four research centers of the UMBI (website: http://www.umbi.umd.edu) and is located on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in a newly constructed state-of-the-art research facility.

We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in extracellular matrix biology and in the use of model systems (e.g. C. elegans) to study basic biology. Current federal funding of the candidate's research is required. We expect broad familiarity with the following disciplines: molecular and cell biology, cellular physiology and biophysics, transgenics, or functional genomics/proteomics and skills needed to examine cellular signals at the molecular level. The ideal candidate will focus on research noted above and which broadly complements our current areas of expertise and that harmonizes with the theme of molecular signaling. The primary criteria for evaluation of candidates will be a record of excellence, originality, and productivity in research. The Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics is seeking a Research Associate Professor for a non-tenure position.

Duties: Participates in investigational, research and developmental projects, directs experimental activities, evaluates data, draws conclusion, and publishes results. Reviews and critiques research and developmental areas, and develops, monitors, and evaluates contractual research and development arrangements. Serves as research advisor to graduate students in the fields of expertise, assists in planning programs, setting objectives, evaluating progress, etc.

Qualifications Requirements: A Ph.D. or equivalent and postdoctoral experience; familiarity with the physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of endocrine and cardiopulmonary cells of tissues, and technical expertise in cell isolation, culture, radioimmunoassay procedures, recombinant DNA techniques, protein electrophoresis, and data analysis. Candidate is expected to perform research as part of a team as well as participate in teaching programs.
