Assistant Clinical Investigator

Laboratory of Neurogenetics, NIA

The Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Aging (NIA), Bethesda, Maryland, is recruiting for an Assistant Clinical Investigator position in the Laboratory of Neurogenetics (LNG), under the direction of Dr. Andrew Singleton. This is a time-limited position with initial appointment for three years. The incumbent will be recruited to run a small research group focusing on the molecular genetics of neuromuscular disorders, and must have a strong background in patient ascertainment and the practical application of genetics in human disease. Specialized knowledge and expertise in the molecular genetics of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly motor neuron diseases, is required. Experience with positional cloning, application of genome wide SNP assays and familiarity with next generation molecular genetic techniques, such as sequence by synthesis, is desirable. In addition a strong background in clinical neurology, specializing in motor neuron diseases is required and expertise in clinical trial design and clinical research is desirable. The incumbent will have major roles in training staff and postdoctoral fellows and maintaining research continuity within the laboratory. An M.D. is required.

Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments. The salary range for this position is $87,193 - $200,000. Tenure or Tenure-Track Position

Occupational Epidemiology / Industrial Hygiene, NCI

A tenure track/tenure position is available in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for one or more Industrial Hygienists (Ph.D. or equivalent). Candidates should have expertise and experience in the conduct of exposure assessment in the context of epidemiologic studies relating occupational exposures to disease risk. Additional expertise in biologic monitoring and statistical modeling are a plus. The studies of occupation-related risk carried out by the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch include retrospective assessment of historical exposures, through industry and questionnaire-based evaluations in case-control and cohort studies, on-site evaluation of exposures through air, dermal and biological monitoring, and studies of early biologic effects and genetic susceptibility. A demonstrated ability to carry out effective collaborations with investigators from different disciplines is critical, as is the ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing, as demonstrated by presentations and publications.

The Laboratory of Clinical Investigation (LCI) of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) is recruiting a scientist for a tenure-track position within its Intramural Research Program (IRP) in Baltimore, MD. This position is 100% research, includes an attractive set-up package and operating budget, and provides the unique and extensive resources of the NIH. Principal Investigators in the LCI include Drs. Josephine M. Egan, Acting Chief, Richard G.S. Spencer, M.D., Ph.D., and Irving W. Wainer, Ph.D. The successful individual will possess an M.D. or Ph.D. with training and experience in the field of endocrine function. Emphasis on nutrition, the aging phenotype or type 2 diabetes would be preferred. Animal Program Director

NIA Intramural Research Program

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Staff Scientist-Facility Head who will serve as the Animal Program Director for the NIA Intramural Research Program (IRP), as well as Section Chief of the Comparative Medicine Section (CMS) of the Research Resources Branch (RRB). The incumbent will be responsible for an AAALAC accredited animal care and use program and for support of the animal research programs in the Institute, studying animal models of development and aging, and interventions to prevent or alleviate aging-related deficits. The supervisory and regulatory responsibilities of this position require the applicant to hold a veterinary degree (D.V.M., V.M.D., or equivalent degree) with certification or eligibility for board certification in laboratory animal medicine or veterinary pathology.

Applicants must have a proven record of management of an animal research program. The expertise and experience should include, but not be limited to interaction and cooperation with scientific staff in a manner that promotes and facilitates their scientific programs. Duties will include cost-effective breeding and maintaining numerous transgenic and knockout lines (currently in excess of 600) including “difficult” lines, collaboration with scientific staff in effective production and import of new genetically manipulated lines, and, especially, in maintaining a current and accurate database on the colony status. The incumbent will oversee animal health surveillance and maintain both a barrier facility and a quarantine area. The incumbent will perform animal surgery and teach appropriate procedures to animal care and technical staff.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The salary range for Staff Scientists is $82,961 - $166,430. The Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Genetics (LCBG) within the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking a comparative biomedical scientist to lead a program that will enhance research and training and foster interdisciplinary translational scientific discovery and development. The NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a federal government agency. The CCR is the largest component of the intramural biomedical research effort at NIH and a major contributor to investigation in the NIH Clinical Research Center, a state-of-the-art research hospital on the campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. The CCR offers tremendous depth and breadth of intellectual and technological resources, as well as opportunities for collaboration with investigators both within and outside the NIH. The successful candidate must have a D.V.M. degree or equivalent, Ph.D. degree and evidence of research productivity, nationally recognized specialty board certification in veterinary pathology, demonstrated supervisory and leadership abilities, experience in the development and management of a training program for comparative biomedical scientists in molecular pathology, and knowledge of, and interest in cancer biology and animal modeling. Preference shall be given to candidates with significant experience working and leading others in an interdisciplinary research environment and integrating animal pathophysiology and the perspective of a veterinary training within human biomedical research. Individuals with experience in developing and/or applying emerging biomedical technologies for credentialing animal models of human disease, including use of noninvasive imaging, shall be given preference. Senior Tenured or Tenure-Track Investigator Position

Mouse Cancer Genetics Program, NCI

The Mouse Cancer Genetics Program (MCGP), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is accepting applications for the position of a Senior Tenured or Tenure-Track Investigator to develop an independent research program focused on mechanistic analysis in cancer biology. The current MCGP labs focus on the in vivo analysis of complex biological problems, with expertise in the areas of cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, genome stability, receptor tyrosine kinase signaling in development and cancer, angiogenesis, stem cell regulation and complex genetics. In addition, the newly established NCI Center for Advanced Preclinical Research (CAPR) provides a unique opportunity to translate basic discovery into preclinical and clinical application using an extensive infrastructure that incorporates the use of genetically engineered cancer models with modern analytical technologies and therapeutic/diagnostic development. Candidate will develop/sustain a laboratory that is focused on complex cancer-related biological processes, building on the existing strengths of MCGP. Areas of emphasis for recruitment include metastasis, cancer-propagating (stem) cells and mechanisms, the cancer microenvironment (particularly the role of immune system), and mechanisms of resistance. Candidates are expected to establish or continue highly competitive research programs in one or more of these areas. Utilization of comparative genomics, proteomics, and/or complex genetics in the approach to these problems is desired, but not required. Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills; record of high quality publications showing significant contributions to the conceptual understanding of cancer mechanisms; have strong analytical skills and a demonstrated ability for collaborative or team science; and must be sufficiently experienced to function independently, both in the development of their own research efforts and (in the case of established investigators) in the mentoring and supervision of junior investigators.
