Occupational Epidemiology / Industrial Hygiene, NCI

A tenure track/tenure position is available in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for one or more Industrial Hygienists (Ph.D. or equivalent). Candidates should have expertise and experience in the conduct of exposure assessment in the context of epidemiologic studies relating occupational exposures to disease risk. Additional expertise in biologic monitoring and statistical modeling are a plus. The studies of occupation-related risk carried out by the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch include retrospective assessment of historical exposures, through industry and questionnaire-based evaluations in case-control and cohort studies, on-site evaluation of exposures through air, dermal and biological monitoring, and studies of early biologic effects and genetic susceptibility. Assistant Clinical Investigator

The Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Aging (NIA), Bethesda, Maryland, is recruiting for an Assistant Clinical Investigator position in the Laboratory of Neurogenetics (LNG), under the direction of Dr. Andrew Singleton. This is a time-limited position with initial appointment for three years. The incumbent will be recruited to run a small research group focusing on the molecular genetics of neuromuscular disorders, and must have a strong background in patient ascertainment and the practical application of genetics in human disease. Specialized knowledge and expertise in the molecular genetics of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly motor neuron diseases, is required. Experience with positional cloning, application of genome wide SNP assays and familiarity with next generation molecular genetic techniques, such as sequence by synthesis, is desirable. In addition a strong background in clinical neurology, specializing in motor neuron diseases is required and expertise in clinical trial design and clinical research is desirable. The incumbent will have major roles in training staff and postdoctoral fellows and maintaining research continuity within the laboratory. An M.D. is required.

Molecular/Cellular Imaging, NIBIB

The Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering is seeking two exceptional interdisciplinary tenure-track principal investigators to lead and conduct cutting edge research in all aspects of the development of new technologies in high-resolution optical imaging that bridge the gap between molecular and cellular scales. The research will be situated on the NIH Campus in Bethesda, Maryland in newly renovated laboratories. Funding for these positions will provide for state-of-the-art equipment, postdoctoral fellows, students, and technical staff. The investigators will have the opportunity to set up their own laboratories, which could include facilities for cell and molecular biology as well as for building innovative instrumentation. NIDDK Scientific Director

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Scientific Director for its Division of Intramural Research (DIR). Staff Scientist

The Laboratory of Neurobiology at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is recruiting a staff scientist on a renewal appointment in the Membrane Signaling Group to organize electrophysiological studies of ion channel regulation by signal transduction pathways. The selectee will independently design, implement, analyze, and trouble shoot patch clamp studies of ion channel regulation and teach patch clamp electrophysiology to other members of the Membrane Signaling Group and members of other research groups within the Division of Intramural Research. This is a technical support position which does not involve independent resources for investigator initiated research.

Minimum qualifications include a doctoral level degree and at least ten years of postdoctoral experience applying the patch clamp technique to studies of ion channel regulation. Expertise in patch clamp of voltage-gated channels at the single channel level and their regulation by calcium and reversible protein phosphorylation in multiple physiological preparations, and success in independently designing, implementing and analyzing successful projects must be documented by multiple publications over at least ten years in top tier physiological journals. Evidence of an appointment at the research faculty level and experience supervising student research projects is also required. Publications demonstrating additional expertise in biophysics, calcium signaling and synaptic physiology are desirable.

The NIAID Clinical Research Transition Program was initiated in 2006 to provide opportunities for physicians to gain clinical and translational research experience in association with an NIAID Division of Intramural Research (DIR) laboratory. The REB focuses on clarifying the roles of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in the etiology of cancer. The REB actively engages in risk estimation and determining host characteristics and genetic factors that modify radiation-related cancer risks. REB studies are a major source of data for key national and international radiation protection and planning agencies, and REB researchers provide advice to academic and policy institutions as well as professional organizations on public health, radiological terrorism, and radiation-related clinical practice.

The REB program includes studies on the late health effects of radiation diagnostic examinations and treatment, radioactive fall-out, radiation accidents (Chernobyl, atomic bomb survivors), occupational radiation exposures, electromagnetic fields, and ultraviolet radiation. There is also a strong focus on the evaluation of new radiation technologies in medicine and new markers of exposure and genetic susceptibility. REB's epidemiologists, statisticians, and health physicists collaborate extensively with scientists in other parts of DCEG, NCI, NIH, and with numerous extramural investigators.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program in an area of ionizing or non-ionizing radiation epidemiology . The successful candidate will receive research support from the intramural research program of NIH for conducting innovative studies and for recruitment of post-doctoral fellows and will be encouraged to engage in a highly collaborative program of research with investigators from NIH and from other institutions.

The Laboratory of Structural Biology in the Division of Intramural Research of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is seeking a Tenure-Track Principal Investigator in X-ray crystallography. The mission of the Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB), Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, is to improve survival and quality of life for children and young adults with cancer through basic, translational and clinical studies spanning molecular oncology, genomics, immunology, bone marrow transplantation, developmental therapeutics and supportive care. The Division of Epidemiology, Statistics and Prevention Research (DESPR) of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development invites applications for the position of Chief of the Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Branch. As an intramural Division, DESPR scientists in its three branches design and conduct investigator-initiated research focusing on a spectrum of human health outcomes, including: reproduction and development, pregnancy and related complications, fetal growth, birth defects, family management of childhood disease, young drivers, and adolescent behavior research. DESPR conducts both prospective longitudinal studies and clinical or behavioral intervention trials using state-of-the-art methodologies. Scientists in the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Branch engage in methods development, collaborative projects, and in mentoring pre- and post-doctoral fellows.

The Chief directs the Branch’s research program, provides leadership and managerial support, and conducts independent and collaborative statistical methods research. The new Chief will be responsible for developing a top-tier bioinformatics group, enabled by recruitment of additional staff. Available resources include: state of the art computing facilities, programming support for statistical methodology and collaborative projects from on-site computer and statistical contractors, and a diverse array of databases and biospecimen banks. Mouse Cancer Genetics Program, NCI CCR

The Mouse Cancer Genetics Program (MCGP), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is accepting applications for the position of a Senior Tenured or Tenure-Track Investigator to develop an independent research program focused on mechanistic analysis in cancer biology. The current MCGP labs focus on the in vivo analysis of complex biological problems, with expertise in the areas of cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, genome stability, receptor tyrosine kinase signaling in development and cancer, angiogenesis, stem cell regulation and complex genetics. In addition, the newly established NCI Center for Advanced Preclinical Research (CAPR) provides a unique opportunity to translate basic discovery into preclinical and clinical application using an extensive infrastructure that incorporates the use of genetically engineered cancer models with modern analytical technologies and therapeutic/diagnostic development. Candidate will develop/sustain a laboratory that is focused on complex cancer-related biological processes, building on the existing strengths of MCGP. Areas of emphasis for recruitment include metastasis, cancer-propagating (stem) cells and mechanisms, the cancer microenvironment (particularly the role of immune system), and mechanisms of resistance. Candidates are expected to establish or continue highly competitive research programs in one or more of these areas. Utilization of comparative genomics, proteomics, and/or complex genetics in the approach to these problems is desired, but not required. Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills; record of high quality publications showing significant contributions to the conceptual understanding of cancer mechanisms; have strong analytical skills and a demonstrated ability for collaborative or team science; and must be sufficiently experienced to function independently, both in the development of their own research efforts and (in the case of established investigators) in the mentoring and supervision of junior investigators. Applicant will be provided sufficient space, equipment and supply budget.
